State rests in Froylan Villegas murder trial 6:30 p.m.
A jury will soon decide the fate of two suspects charged in a murder that shook the entire state.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Closing statements are expected Friday in the trial of two of the suspects in the murder of 11-year-old Froylan Villegas.
Both sides each rested their case in the trial for Nathen Garley and Jose Romero – two of the three men accused of shooting and killing Froylan in 2023.
The third suspect – Daniel Gomez – was one of 18 state witnesses the jury heard from.
On Thursday, an expert talked about using cell phone data to track the suspects after the shooting. Attorneys for Garley and Romero questioned the expert on whether prosecutors had anything to do with putting together her presentation.
A medical investigator described the process of putting together the report and reviewing photos of Froylan, including his CT scan.
Prosecutors asked him to describe a series of photos. Because the photos were graphic, the judge passed them around to the jury as he did not want them shown in the courtroom.
Ultimately, medical investigators said the cause of Froylan’s death was homicide by gunshot wounds.
