Suspect in shooting of 11-year-old pleads guilty to separate drug charge

Nathan Garley faces charges for the drive-by shooting death of 11-year-old Froylan Villegas and he recently pleaded guilty to a separate federal drug charge.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — One of the people charged in the killing of an 11-year-old boy, near Isotopes Park, is facing time for another crime.

Nathen Garley pleaded guilty in federal court to possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute it. A federal complaint states Garley was arrested Sept. 13 in Grants for possession with intent to distribute 400 grams of a substance containing fentanyl.

Later on, they connected him to the killing of 11-year-old Froylan Villegas, which happened a week before the stop.

Froylan was in a vehicle leaving an Albuquerque Isotopes game with his family when three men opened fire on their vehicle, killing Froylan.

Police said it was a case of mistaken identity. They said Garley and two other people thought they were shooting at the car of a rival gang.

The trial for that case is scheduled to begin Feb. 17.
