Kirtland Air Force Base airman shot and killed

One airman was killed and another wounded by gunfire at the Truman Gate of Kirtland Air Force Base.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — One airman is dead and a second has been injured after an early morning shooting in front of the Truman gate of Kirtland Air Force Base.

In a Sunday update, the U.S. Air Force stated that Brion Teel-Scott, 27, an airman from Bordentown, New Jersey, was fatally shot after fleeing an attempted detention Saturday.

“Losing a member of your team is never easy but the circumstances of this incident make it that much harder,” said Col. Michael Power, 377th Air Base Wing and Installation commander, in an Air Force press release. “Additionally, we are ensuring our injured defender, the Wingmen of both members, and our base community receive the best possible care and support.”

The shooting happened at about 2 a.m. when security forces personnel went to an incident near the entrance gate. That resulted in shots being fired, according to the original statement from the base.

Officials say the incident started at the base gate and led to an off-base pursuit that resulted in one airman being shot in the hand and another killed.

The Air Force Office of Special Investigations, along with the FBI, are investigating.
