Man sentenced for 1992 cold case rape

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A judge handed down an 18-year prison sentence to a man who pleaded guilty to raping a 10-year-old girl in 1992.

Agents with the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office arrested Freddy Valenzuela in November 2023 for threatening a girl with a knife and raping her, after following her to a convenience store, on Oct. 30, 1992. They arrested Valenzuela after processing a kit and matching it to him.

While the victim died before the match, her family pressed charges against Valenzuela. He pleaded guilty in December 2024 to two counts of criminal sexual penetration, a second-degree felony.

Valenzuela faced up to 18 years, which he received.
