“He lived with his mom and his brother, and he would take off sometimes and take off, go get an Airbnb for a while do stuff like that.”
Dave Spargo is talking about his 24-year-old son Austin who was reported missing in early November.
“After he didn’t come back after a few days, like he normally would have it started raising suspicion,” Dave said.
Dave reportedly reached out to the Rio Rancho Police Department, but he said they told him there wasn’t much they could do.
So, Dave took matters into his own hands, putting up a Facebook post and asking people to share it.
A few days later, someone responded saying they saw Austin’s car posted on the Rio Rancho Crime Watch Facebook Page.
“I called the Rio Rancho Police Department with the news with what I had found out, and they said, ‘oh, yeah, we know about that car. That was Sandoval County who made contact with that vehicle,’” he said.
He said police told him not to go looking for the car – he would get in the way of investigators. But Dave was tired of waiting.
“If it hadn’t been for the good Samaritan, who I finally got a hold of, and he gave me a pinpoint to where to start looking. We may have never found him we might have always wondered what happened to him.”
Dave found his son’s body Tuesday, and said it appears Austin had taken his own life.
Dave said he feels like more could’ve been done to prevent this tragedy.
“As a whole, we were dismissed over and over again. And we had to call and ask, can we do this? Can we do this? What can we do? “ he said about trying to get police help.
Now, the family is just trying to remember Austin.
KOB 4 reached out to the Rio Rancho Police Department about this matter but have not heard back.
